Unemployment rate could be lower than 4% if economy grows

Manpower Minister Ng Eng Hen says the big number of jobs created last year was very encouraging

He adds the unemployment rate will remain below four percent if the Singapore economy can grow between four and five percent this year.

To keep the unemployment figure down, it's important to improve the nation's economic performance.

Good economic fundamentals and a competitive wage system are important

Despite the positive figures, Dr Ng says it's critical to redesign jobs to equip Singaporeans with adequate skills.

Only then will these workers here be able to take on the jobs when the opportunity arises.

Dr Ng was speaking to reporters at the Workforce Development Agency's Conservancy Job Redesign Pledge Signing Ceremony.

Meantime, MP and unionist Halimah Yacob says workers should continue to focus on skills upgrading.

While the union will continue to help the unemployed find jobs, Madam Halimah says it's important not to forget those who're currently working.

This is because structural unemployment will always remain an issue.

Mdm Halimah told Newradio 93.8,"We cannot just think about those who're unemployed, but those who're currently in employment, the focus to help them to upgrade their skills must continue, so that in the event that they get unemployed in the future, they can continue to do the new jobs that are coming on stream which require higher skills".
