Cloning, also sometimes called drive imaging or ghosting
is a fast and powerful solution for backup and disaster recovery.
The basic principle is to copy the entire contents of the
hard disks' partitions to an image file. The image file can
be compressed and stored in another storage device, such as
CD/DVD, external hard disk, network drive, etc., as well as
locally in another partition of the same hard disk. The image
file can then be restored to the hard disk in cases of computer
"breakdown" that can occur after installation of
software or change of settings.
The best advantage of cloning is its speedy recovery when
done properly. It can basically eliminate data loss to the
minimum, as the entire contents are actually backed up and
"safe" in another storage device. There is however
a potential for disastrous errors if it is not done correctly.
Hence, novice users are highly encouraged to seek the professional
advice of expert users or consultants, to prevent erroneous
issues and catastrophic data loss.
