Re-employment till 65 starts in 2012
Singapore has one of the world's fastest-ageing populations. Today, the republic with a population of more than 4 million, one in 12 Singaporeans are older than 65 years. By year 2030, this ratio will become one in five.
To tackle the problem of an ageing population, the Singapore government has been striving to make policies to build an elderly-friendly society where Singaporeans will look forward to growing old in.
The Singapore government encourages the elderly to work instead of to rely on state welfare. In line with that, the government may eventually raise the retirement age from 62 to 65 or beyond. From 2012, there will be laws to make employers re-hire older workers.
"Retirement" should become a thing of the past and Singaporeans should work as long as they can and as they want.
Hence, ageing-in-place is encouraged by the government that has to face one of the world's fastest ageing populations.
